Whether or not you’re tech-savvy, you’ve likely heard of the latest sensation, ChatGPT (Generative Pre-Trained Transformer), the conversational agent prototype from American company OpenAI.

Launched at the end of 2022, ChatGPT has generated significant buzz ever since. In this article, you’ll discover everything you need to know about it: how it works, its advantages, and its limitations.

What is ChatGPT?

“ChatGPT is a language processing model developed by OpenAI. It can autonomously produce text using machine learning techniques, based on a vast corpus of training data. It is used for tasks such as generating responses to questions, writing texts, automatic translation, and understanding natural language.” This is how ChatGPT describes itself.

ChatGPT is the new prototype chatbot, or “conversational agent,” that uses artificial intelligence to engage in dialogue and provide answers to its users.

Conceived by Elon Musk and Sam Altman, and powered by OpenAI, a company they co-founded, this technology raises numerous questions, particularly among digital professionals.

Despite its beta status, this intelligent tool offers a range of features:

  • Answering user questions
  • Generating unique text content
  • Solving complex mathematical equations
  • Translating into different languages
  • Providing recommendations
  • Creating text summaries
  • Debugging code and programming languages

Moreover, it includes a set of functions aimed at simplifying daily life for many users, especially web writing and copywriting professionals.

“The dialogue format allows ChatGPT to answer follow-up questions, acknowledge its errors, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests,” summarizes OpenAI.

As of October 31, 2024, OpenAI unveiled SearchGPT, a major feature that allows ChatGPT to simulate a search engine while generating detailed responses based on the top search results.

How Does the ChatGPT Chatbot Work?

This is certainly one of the most frequently asked questions about ChatGPT. Like many other AIs, it is trained on a vast database sourced from nearly 9 million web pages and other resources, such as text corpuses or novels.

This next-generation chatbot operates on the principle of transfer learning, meaning it can adapt its existing knowledge from its database to apply in new contexts during new queries. It can learn autonomously just by interacting with users and adapting its responses to meet their needs.

How to Use the Chat GPT AI?

To use it, simply visit its portal and create an account to access the interface. Currently, ChatGPT is available for free in many countries. Once your account is active, you can use the chat to inquire about a variety of topics. You can also download the ChatGPT for Google extension to access responses generated by the chatbot in real-time during your Google searches.

For example, if you search: “What is internal linking on a website?” you will see various suggested sites on the left side of your results page that could answer your question, and on the right side, the chatbot GPT’s response to your query.

While its text-based exchange format would make ChatGPT a revolutionary app to have on your phone, it is not yet available on iOS or Android. Many fraudulent applications have emerged since the announcement of this conversational agent, seeing significant downloads on app platforms.

What Are the Advantages of ChatGPT?

A Multilingual Chatbot

While many chatbots have been of interest for years, most of those we use daily only allow us to ask questions about a specific area related to a service or an order. The ChatGPT technology appears revolutionary due to its many features (listed above). Its secret weapon? This 2.0 conversational agent has the capability to produce “human-like” responses and content in response to requests made in any language, even the most complex.

Unlimited Writing Capability?

Its second strength is its ability to learn from queries to improve its future responses, catering better to user needs. It promises unique, fresh, and dynamic content for each user, useful for web writing in both professional and academic contexts.

This is a point of frustration for digital professionals, especially in the field of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). With the ChatGPT tool, it is now possible for any business to create more relevant content for a targeted audience, focusing on the specific interests of the reader. Besides generating text quickly, the chatbot guarantees results free from grammar and spelling errors.

What Are the Limitations of ChatGPT?

The opportunities offered by this AI may seem impressive at first glance, but like all technologies, it has its limitations.

Cultural Limitations

One of its many advantages is to adapt to all languages; however, despite its extensive database, ChatGPT cannot adjust in real-time to the various cultural experiences and diversities, which may lead it to generate inappropriate or out-of-context responses. Although the prototype can interpret some nuances, it currently cannot grasp the subtleties of certain human conversations, struggling with specific cultural linguistic styles.

Additionally, when responding to our questions, ChatGPT remains purely factual and lacks the ability to “philosophize” or engage in critical thinking on certain topics. This uniformity of thought prevents it from offering a personal opinion based on the context of the query.

Creative Limitations

While ChatGPT can generate high-quality content, it may not match the quality and creativity of human-generated content. The same goes for text coherence: content generated by GPT may not align with a brand’s image, unique value proposition (UVP), and overall tone.

Unlike a human, artificial intelligence cannot account for concepts of values, professional expertise, or commitments (innovation, economy, ecology, social impact, etc.), and therefore cannot produce content that completely reflects a company’s identity.

Data Limitations

In reality, its very database can represent a limitation for this tool. This database itself may contain biased or faulty algorithms, which can affect the accuracy of its responses. ChatGPT also seems to face issues with the recency of its results, as it currently does not cover any data or events posted online after 2021.

What to Retain About the Future of ChatGPT AI?

As you can see, ChatGPT may play an important role in the future, especially with its writing and content creation capabilities. However, the reality is that AI technologies are not yet sufficiently advanced to fully replace humans. This tool can indeed produce, but in a limited manner; it is not truly agile. The conclusion to draw is that this innovation is fully integrated into a process of human-machine complementarity.

Expert Opinions on ChatGPT

This tool will undoubtedly secure its place in the digital realm and will likely be greatly utilized by agencies or professionals seeking to increase their visibility and create rapid content. However, we must remember that it is a tool derived from technology, and like all tools we use daily (whether for technical purposes, semantics, data analysis, etc.), it should be seen as a system that adds a layer of artificial intelligence to human reflection.

Let’s also keep in mind that Google has the capacity to detect AI-generated content, and a potential algorithm update could soon enhance its spam detection system… Stay tuned!

OpenAI Takes a Step Towards Openness: Future ChatGPT Model Weights Soon Accessible

On Monday, April 1, 2024, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced that the company would reveal part of the architecture of a new generative artificial intelligence (AI) model. This decision marks a strategic shift, especially since the company has been closely guarding its programs and methods since the launch of ChatGPT. OpenAI will provide free access to the weight parameters, which define how a model operates and guides it after its development.

A Promise from Sam Altman

“Open weight” differs from “open source,” which refers to unrestricted access to the actual programming code of the model. The former is more limited and does not allow for the determination of how an AI interface is constructed. Experts have criticized several generative AI players for claiming to offer open access while actually limiting it to weights. Access to weights can help developers calibrate an OpenAI model according to their specific needs. “We’ve been thinking about this for a long time, but other priorities took precedence,” Altman explained on X (formerly Twitter), reminding that OpenAI had not released details of a model since GPT-2, which was launched in 2019.

“Open weight” is not “open source” An AI like ChatGPT relies on a complex mathematical function composed of billions of parameters. During training, the model adjusts these parameters—also known as weights—to optimize its performance. This weighting system is the core of the model. When OpenAI announces a publication in “open weight,” it means that these weights will be freely accessible, but not the model’s source code—in other words, no details on its design or training process.

The “DeepSeek Moment”

ChatGPT, launched in November 2022, was based on GPT-3.5. The model in question will go online “in the coming months,” said Kevin Weil, product manager at OpenAI, on X. In the meantime, the startup will organize events in San Francisco, Europe, and Asia to allow programmers to test the model and share their impressions and suggestions. Until now, OpenAI, alongside Anthropic, was one of the few major players in generative AI that had not disclosed any details about the mechanics of their models. Meta, Google, and Mistral have all chosen to publish parts of their architectures, as has the Chinese company DeepSeek, whose R1 model has shaken up the generative AI landscape this past January.
